Welcome to CarvedRice.com!
Carving rice has been my hobby for nearly five years now. I've spent countless hours working on new patterns, creating new tools, and, of course, carving the grains.
How did you get into such an unusual hobby?
I was wandering around the kiosks in an outdoor mall one day, and I spoke to a lady who was painting names on rice. I watched her for awhile, and listened to her explain her craft to me. I thought it was a fun idea, so I started to gather supplies. tech pens, rice, and putty to hold them.
I went to work right away once I got home. first thing I realized is that a grain of rice has ridges, and is not smooth. different types of rice have different shapes and textures. My first few were on some whole grain rice I had around the house. It was a mess, the ink was wrong, and ran vertically down the grain, to press the pen hard enough to make an even line, parts of the line would smudge....
After a week of issues like this, I ended up with a paintbrush in my hand, and some nice smooth grains of standard white rice that had already been hulled. I tried all kinds of things, and eventually painted some beautiful pieces, including one that had a sunflower on it. It became too easy, and I became bored with it. One of my other hobbies is sculpting and painting miniatures |
